Pediatric Speech Therapy
Speech therapy for children of all ages, with support for speech, language, and communication at every stage of development.
Pediatric Speech Therapy Services
Canopy provides speech and language therapy from early childhood through adolescence. We support children with a wide range of communication challenges, from early speech delays to more complex needs.
We offer all services at our Phoenix office or virtually across Arizona.
Speech & Language Evaluations
Our comprehensive evaluations guide the therapy process. We carefully choose the right assessment tools to identify each child’s strengths, areas for improvement, and learning style.
❋ We use evaluation results to map out the therapy process and determine best practices for each individual child.
Speech Delay & Late Talker Therapy
We use evidence-based strategies and engaging play to motivate children to express themselves in a variety of ways.
❋ Our techniques help children communicate their wants and needs in everyday life.
Speech Sound Disorder Therapy
Our evidence-based techniques guide children to become more intelligible in all settings. Frustration levels drop significantly as children become clearer in their speech, and individuals understand what they are saying.
❋ Children become more confident communicators in all areas of their lives.
Receptive & Expressive Language Delays
We teach the rules of language and compensatory strategies to help children comprehend and express language.
❋ Children are able to understand directions more clearly, recall spoken information, and express themselves using accurate grammar and syntax.
Autism Communication Support
Connection is the heart of our therapy. We determine what interests each child and ensure they are comfortable working with their therapists.
❋ Whether through AAC training, social communication therapy, or speech and language development, we give children the tools to communicate in society while staying true to their individuality.
Stuttering Therapy
We analyze the context and frequency of stuttering and associated behaviors. We instill confidence in children and provide them with compensatory strategies to move easily through moments of stuttering to express themselves fully.
❋ Children move from self-consciousness to confidence when speaking.
Social Communication Therapy
There are many unwritten social rules that society expects everyone to understand and follow. We help children navigate these expectations while also being true to themselves. We listen to the concerns of children and families and target specific social rules and behaviors.
❋ Through explicit teaching and role-playing, children become more confident in their abilities to interact with others.
Virtual Speech Therapy
Our virtual services use the same evidence-based techniques as our in-person services to best suit the needs of each individual child.
❋ Children are able to reach their goals and become more competent and confident communicators from the comfort of their home.

What Speech Therapy Looks Like at Canopy
Therapy starts with connection and determination of how the child is feeling on the day of the session.
We briefly review objectives from previous sessions and discuss objectives for the current session.
Evidence-based strategies, conversation, and play are woven throughout the session to best meet the needs of the child.
Session objectives are reiterated to the child and their family, family coaching is provided, and at-home practice activities are reviewed.
Who We Help & What We Work on
Birth to 3
Not talking yet, very few words, points instead of asking, hard for anyone outside the family to understand.
❋ Therapy focuses on exposing children to an abundance of language and providing opportunities for children to express themselves in a variety of ways.
3 to 5
Sounds have not come in, shorter sentences than peers, trouble following directions, frustration when not understood.
❋ Therapy focuses on expanding utterance length through exposure to new vocabulary, expanding attention skills to better comprehend directions, and using phonological and motor learning principles to improve intelligibility.
5 to 8
Speech is still hard to understand at school, stuttering shows up or gets worse, trouble telling a story in order, difficulty with the back and forth of conversation.
❋ Therapy focuses on using phonological and motor learning principles to improve intelligibility, teaching the rules of the English language, sequencing ideas in a logical order, and coaching strategies to improve confidence in verbal communication.
8 to 18
Lingering sound errors that affect confidence, reading and writing that lag behind, trouble navigating friendships and group work.
❋ Therapy focuses on using phonological and motor learning principles to improve intelligibility, connecting reading and writing to phonological skills, and role playing social scenarios to improve connection with others.
What Parents Ask Us About Pediatric Speech Therapy
These are the questions we hear most often, answered by Canopy owner and speech therapist Jack Anger, MS, CCC-SLP.
-
The frequency of therapy sessions is often dependent on the nature of the challenges and the severity of the challenges. Each child’s treatment plan is unique and carefully determined to best suit their individual needs.
-
The amount of time a child spends in speech therapy is determined by a multitude of factors including the nature of the challenges, the severity of the challenges, and family involvement to name a few. The children and families who are consistent with therapy sessions and routinely practice outside of therapy sessions often make the fastest progress.
-
The best time for speech therapy is when a concern is first noted. Early intervention often leads to faster outcomes and greater success. The second best time is right now. Meaningful progress can be made at any age.
-
Yes! We love family members to be active participants in therapy sessions. This allows families to experience the strategies used in sessions and replicate them at home. This often results in faster outcomes and more confidence with children and families.
